Disclaimer: In case you are wondering, why you read about something from last Christmas in late August – we had the post all ready and then…forgot…to publish it… And we thought it would be a shame to leave it buried (if we back-dated it), right?
Some of you are probably aware of our tradition of thanking public servants on Christmas Day, by bringing some baked goodies to them. Well, this year we decided to not only continue that tradition, but actually expand on it to include a main dish as well 
It took us quite a while to agree on what we wanted to do and finally settled on a Shepherd’s Pie, our Cowtown Kitchen Rocky Mountain Road squares and some Cinnamon Apple Sauce Christmas ornaments. For the EMS Nico chose a heart cookie cutter, since they take care of sick and injured people, while the firemen got a reindeer, so they could get to the emergencies faster, since they can fly… Preschooler logic
Now in Chateauguay we had one of each, while Calgary has tons of fire stations, EMS stations and police stations, so we decided to call around to see which stations we could actually go to on Christmas Day and were close to us and were told that none of the police stations were open to the public on Christmas, since they are only out on patrol. Therefore we had to forgo the police and concentrate on the fire station and EMS station.
The fire station just happened to be the same that we went to for Nico’s birthday party, different crew, but they were very happy to see us and we got to see their kitchen, too, nicely big and well equipped, good to see that they are well taken care of in that department as well.
There actually was an ambulance there as well, but we had figured that it was just there from the EMS station, so we went over to the EMS station (about 5 minute drive) and – nobody was there. Good start to this, so home we went and tried again an hour later and one EMS was there, the ambulance was still out on a call, but hey, one is all we needed, lol. He also was very touched that we thought of them and from him we also learned that the ambulance that we had seen at the fire station actually is stationed there, so we asked him for two of the ornaments. When I got to the fire station, the EMS was touched by the story behind the ornament and its shape, while one of the firemen told me that they loved their lunch And we were all done with our good deed of Christmas
A few days later, Nico and his Grandma met some firemen at the store and told them about what we had done, and they were in awe about our tradition
As mentioned in previous posts, the public services are extremely grateful for us thinking of them and not just taking them for granted, so we encourage you, too, to do something similar. It does not take a lot of effort or cost to you, but it can make a big difference and make the people that are there for you in case of an emergency feel appreciated and it also teaches your children to be thankful and it just makes you feel good, too
